Garlen Lo Releases New Single ‘Pretty Baby’

Quirky indie-popster from London. Likes singalongs and wordplay. AKA Hong Kong Cockney*

Garlen Lo is a born-and-bred Londoner of Hong Kong-Chinese origin. Aged 7 he was raised by a wine-guzzling auntie who played country music at max volume. One Christmas, he got a guitar and took naturally to writing drunken singalongs with twee wordplay.

He formed an unruly, skinny-jeaned indie band in the mid-2000s, but after that imploded, tried to become a respectable member of society. Not quite succeeding at that either, he resumed his love for songwriting during the pandemic. And he is chuffed that his first six singles have all been someone’s ‘track of the week’.

He is a one-man band: playing all the instruments, singing, producing, and making the music videos. Songs about lost love seems to be his thing. His Mastermind subject would be The Beatles.

*For a short time, he went by the artist name Hong Kong Cockney but lacked the confidence to see it through. He likes it as a nickname though, like Springsteen’s The Boss.

‘Pretty Baby’ is Garlen Lo’s eighth single. A love song he wrote when he was 17. After 20 years of playing it at family gatherings, it’s finally released to the world. It’s twee indie pop. A mix between Sam Cooke and The Moldy Peaches.

Garlen says:

“‘Pretty Baby’ is a really simple song. It’s uses mainly 3 chords (C F G plus one extra sneaky Bb/D in the bridge). You can sing both Sam Cooke’s Wonderful World and Cupid over it; whilst it has that simple lo-fi aesthetic of The Moldy Peaches. It’s the most ‘pop’ sounding song of my eight singles released so far.

Written when I was 17, I’ve played this song for 20+ years at family gatherings. It’s their favourite partly cause of its singalong-ness. But the bass and and guitar solo were written this year, specifically for the release.”

The song also comes with a cute music video that Garlen has drawn frame-by-frame. This lo-fi animation matches the DIY aesthetic of the song, giving off real indie vibes. Indeed, Garlen does everything himself: writes, plays, produces, and makes the music videos.

The Ritz Release New EP ‘The Ties That Bind’

Emerging from Burton On Trent, The Ritz are steering a new era of indie rock. They blend introspective lyrics and narrative depth, with catchy and melodic riffs. They have quickly distinguished themselves within the vibrant new music scene, capturing the minds of a rapidly expanding, and loyal fan base. Since their inception in March 2023, Robbie Joyce (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Finley Armitage (lead guitar), Seb Cook-Abbott (bass), and Tom Warrilow (drums) have crafted a sound that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly authentic.

Their music, marked by Joyce’s evocative songwriting, has earned them wide-spread critical acclaim, with support from BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and promoters This Feeling

Early singles and live performances have helped showcase their potential, and they are poised and ready in their journey towards musical recognition.

Following the earlier releases of ‘Give Me a Sign’, ‘When I Need You Most’, ‘Only Time Will Tell’ and ‘Back Against The Wall’ the band are now on the cusp of releasing the EP from which the four tracks are taken called ‘The Ties That Bind’.

‘OUT OF THE BLUE’ again has the 90’s inspired sound with its anthemic beats and happy-go-lucky sounding story telling lyricism.

Robbie has said of the EP:-

“The Ties That Bind is our debut EP and it includes all of the songs that we have released so far! We’re very excited for everyone to hear the new tracks and how they sound with our previous work. We feel like the title of the EP encapsulates the mood of the songs, especially the lyrics, as they are all about the relationships that we have with one another, and what brings us together.”

All tracks on the EP were written by Robbie Denver Joyce, and recorded by The Ritz band.

The two new songs for the EP (Left On Read and Out Of The Blue), were recorded at The

Lounge Studio in Wigan with producer Gareth Nuttall, who has also worked with bands such as The K’s, The Lottery Winners and Lissy Taylor.

The other four songs on the EP, which were previously released as singles, were recorded at

Dorothy Bird Releases New Single ‘Meteorites’

Leading with atmospheric delicacy, Dorothy Bird makes music for heavy thinkers to escape into. Music is her way of sharing joy, pain, and everything in between, with the hope that it resonates with those who need it most.

Her songs soothe the soul and welcome a moment of calm and freedom from the chaos of the world. Dorothy’s songs present haunting atmospheres, a blend of electronic and acoustic instruments and captivating beats, alongside beautifully pure vocals that softly and melodically whisper poetic references on life.

Already compared to Beth Gibbons and Kate BushDorothy Bird’s sound is unique and “characteristically individual” – Neil March, Fresh on the Net

With ringing endorsements from BBC Introducing, Tom Robinson’s Fresh On The Net & BBC6music Mixtape and Mersey Radio, the Berlin and Liverpool-based Art-Pop singer-songwriter has released four solo EPs and an album.

Dorothy Bird Has said of the track:-

As we live our lives, sometimes we’re hit by meteorites… memories that seem to come from nowhere. What seems to be important now might vaporise over time, while other long-forgotten memories or feelings might suddenly strike us. No logic or planning can prevent this… the memories come regardless of what we’re doing at that moment. And we owe it to ourselves to live a full life, no matter what hits us.

Dorothy Bird  features on vocals, composition, piano/synth, production on the track and is supported by Jon Lawton on guitars, production and Ryan Mallows on drums. The track was written predominantly by Julia Fiebelkorn aka Dorothy Bird with credits also going to Jonathan Michael Lawton. IMLAC Releases New Single ‘Scrap Metal’

Imlac which in Gaelic means “shoreland” is a Scottish singer-songwriter who, having travelled all over Europe playing shows, has now settled in the East of England.  A true troubadour, Imlac’s sound echoes the Americana traditions of folk and blues, with a  hint of soul and gospel, whilst remaining a strong link to the celtic traditions of his roots.

Imlac writes songs of quiet desperation, for ordinary men or women stuck in dead-end jobs, relationships that pull and tear, and for those with dreams bulging against the cabled cage of modern urban repetition

Having receiving praise and multiple previous plays from the likes of Tom Robinson in BBC radio 6, having performed on a Christmas special for BBC 1 TV, having won the folk award two years running at the NMG Awards, played Cambridge Folk Festival two years running, performed at The Secret Garden PartyThe Troubadour  and So Far in Earls Court and receiving glowing reviews in the press, Imlac is now on the cusp of releasing his forthcoming Album the first single from which ‘Scrap Metal’

Having only been releasing music since the summer of 2021, Imlac has obviously come a long way in the past few years and his star is rising rapidly as he becomes more and more well known on the indie folk circuit for his stunningly beautiful offerings.

The first single to be lifted from the forthcoming album is the complex yet delicate track of ‘Scrap Metal’. The melody ebbs and flows on a varying wave of emotions, the lyrics depicting a story of grief from the tender, stripped back opening bars to the gentleness of the sublime vocals before elements of anger and confusion seep in, in the chorus hooks, when the pace of the track picks up and the song moves in a different direction, before easing and mellowing once more.

Imlac has said of the Track;-

“The song is about the nature of loss and trying to reconstruct your identity in the aftermath of loss. It was composed after I experienced two great losses in my life, one romantic, one familial, and I really didn’t know how I was to go forward after that. The ‘Scrap Metal’ metaphor is the idea that when you feel that desperate, you have to just grab anything in order to rebuild yourself. It is the first song of the new album – the trajectory of the songs begins with this sense of loss but builds ultimately to a sense of hope through change and metamorphosis.

The track was written by Neil Graham (Imlac) who also performs vocals and rhythm guitar on it. He is joined on the single by Jonners Czerwik on piano & horns,  Rick Hudson  on drums and  John Parker on double-bass. The track was Recorded at  Gladeside Recording Studios in Cambridge with Producer Dan Wilde.

Stone Deaf Release New Song ‘Red Head’

The song was written by Stone Deaf’s frontman Michael Pole who also features on the track on main vocals, lead and rhythm guitar. The drums were played by William Walton and the bass was done by Travis McDonagh. It was recorded in South Wales by James Weaver. The band formed in Swansea in October 2023 and is already playing sold out shows full to the brim with energy and power.

The song was tonally influenced by Jack White in terms of its distorted guitar work and upper octave solos full of double stops a la Angus Young (AC/DC). The rhythm part was also influenced by Queens of the Stone Age with its straight staccato downstrokes.

The song was inspired by a short relationship turned sour that had a strong underpinning in manipulation and exploitation so that ‘Red Head’ through any means necessary could obtain what they wanted.

The song is full of energy, rebellion and getting the truth out there so that those in or who have been in toxic relationships can see that they’re not alone and most importantly to take a step back and stand up for themselves.

The recording of this track took place in Swansea, South Wales with producer James Weaver who was carefully selected by the band so to retain as much of the energy the band had in live shows and bring it on to the record.

Fast forward to August 2024 and the original 5 members from Derby, England are back and they are raring to go with some new music as well as looking forward to performing live some of the classic Sunwheel anthems.

The new track is a massively appealing anthem with a distinct vibe to the songs of the band’s heyday while still managing to sound fresh and exciting to a whole new audience of fans.
