The Kids Are United – April 20th

Since the introduction of social media, many teenagers rarely go anywhere and do not experience live music, hence the future of the industry could eventually die. Many venues are also 18+ preventing teenagers from attending venues. This is a project to try to encourage young people back to live music, while booking venues that allow younger people through the door.

We Believe Music have decided to host a teenage gig ‘The Kids Are United’ at Side Door in Liverpool on April 20th 2pm-7pm. Musicians, promoters etc are invited to attend the show in order to support the future of music in the UK and be there to offer advice to teenagers. Manchester band SHADE recently supported Louis Tomlinson during his tour and have offered to play a full set as well as be there for the duration of the show.

This will be the second The Kids Are United event, the previous was in Manchester, a third hopefully to be hosted in Leeds, to grow the fanbase of our younger musicians which in turn will help them grow and succeed. This really is a fantastic opportunity for young musicians and teenagers who have a love for music!

Tickets can be found at www.fatsoma.com

By The Waves Release New Single ‘Vampires’

By the Waves are a dynamic 4-piece band based in Manchester. A uniquely eclectic sprinkle of soul, dream-pop, reggae, rock & indie make their sound exciting and unforgettable in equal measure. They bring beautifully constructed lyrics, delivered with a signature blend of falsetto melody lines and anthemic choruses, which are layered over driving rhythmic beats and groove-ridden baselines, all topped off with sun-drenched, reverb-soaked guitar lines and a pinch of synth.

Their music has a cinematic quality that takes you on a captivating but relatable journey with every song. The ease by which By the Waves blend genres is a testament to the diversity of its members and their influences. Ben Thomas’ vocal range and phraseology is an impressive example of somebody at the peak of their powers, channelling influences from Jim Morrison to Otis Redding and Sting. Sonically beautiful is the guitar work provided by James Murray whose ability to play infectious riffs and chord structures, inspired by Johhny Marr and Robert Smith, make the songs instantly identifiable. Pulsating percussion and engaging grooves are provided effortlessly by Luke Finch and provide the metronomic precision and dynamism of players such as Ringo Starr, Jack Bevan & Nathan Followill. His ability to seamlessly spark a shift in tempo lays the perfect backdrop for Hristo Gerdzhikov’s basslines to drive the rhythm section like a steam-train, whilst also lacing additional melodic sounds with his unique approach to the bass. Like the heart-beat of an Olympic sprinter, he never misses a beat and recalls the essence of the likes of Bootsy Collins to Pino Palladino & Thundercat.

With songs that feature multi-lingual vocals written from experiences spent living overseas, By the Waves manage to do what many strive for, but few can achieve: to create something as familiar as a hang out with friends and yet still manage to remain as fresh as a sea breeze on a hot summer’s day. With lots of upcoming song releases, 2024 is set to be an exciting year for the band.

Vampires – “Ever had a friend who suddenly met a new romance and became unrecognisable overnight, only to make you question everything you thought about the friendship in the first place? They’re seldom ever seen and seldom ever heard. Alas, it seems they’re just vampires.’’

Ventrelles Release New Single ‘Acid Flower’

VENTRELLES are the Manchester-based quartet headed by Phil Knox on lead vocals and guitars, Connor Long  on Guitars/Lead Guitar,  Paul Winny Mawhinney on Bass and Gaykord Knott on Drums/Percussion. They describe their sound as ‘Fleece Pop’ fusing the styles of 80’s guitar groups such as Pale Fountains and Echo and the Bunnymen and sometimes darker tinged edges of The Chameleons and The Jesus and Mary Chain with a punchy delivery, sun-soaked guitars, energetic rhythms, life-affirming vocals and soulful bass lines.

Formed from the embers of past collectives and distant echoes of teenage knock about bands, Phil came home from living in Chicago in 2014 ready to take on the world of music, so with the help of some band mates old and new, the VENTRELLES sound was born.

The unusual band name came about by combining the Chicago Transit Authority ‘Ventra’ card and The ‘L’ train to form what the band admit sounds a bit like a Phil Spector produced female soul-pop group!

Having previously toured with cult indie favourites Cabbage and having had repeated radio support from Jim Salevson on XS Manchester, the band are now currently putting the finishing touches to what they describe as the first ever Fleece Pop album, the debut single from which ‘Acid Flower’ is out now.

‘Acid Flower’ is 3 minutes and 30 seconds of equal parts pulverising shoegazing wall of sound and shimmering acoustic-led foot tapping rhythms, laced with acid chiming melodious lyricism Perfect for fans of The La’s, Super Furry Animals, Ride and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Front man Phil Knox has said of the track;

I was listening to Johnny Marr’s solo back catalogue quite a lot at the time, it was definitely influenced by him guitar wise, lyrically, I just scribbled out anything that sounded like it was coming from an indie band in 2023/4. I wanted a more old school direct but not obvious feel. I wanted to leave some space for the listener to make their own mind up about what this particular song was about.  I always try to keep them as open books, keep the magic in there, it’s rare nowadays, a lot of modern songwriters don’t leave any mystery. It’s a disappearing art in a world that’s constantly telling you what to feel.”

‘Acid Flower’ was written by Phil Knox and was predominantly recorded at Vibe Studios in Manchester with additional vocals being added to the track in Phil’s living room!

Upcoming Gigs/Tours –

Ventrelles will undertake a mini headline tour this year amongst other things taking in Grimsby, Blackpool, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow for starters. Fans are advised to keep an eye on the band’s socials or sign up to their mailing list for updates.

Next up for the band will be the upcoming release, the soulful stomp of ‘’Sand Crawl’ followed by the promise of the bands seminal album in Summer 2024.

Caesar Of Cymatics Releases New Single ‘Sunday Mourn’

Caesar Of Cymatics’ new single makes way for a new genre called Motorway Music. Using a mix of psychedelia, emotions of paranoia and experimental assets have all blended together to give the ambience and nostalgia of a car journey. Written alone in his room after experiencing a traumatic breakup and being tossed to the sidelines of life, making him become a social outcast, Caesar created this track to provide himself with comfort, nostalgia and reflection in one of the most difficult periods of his life.

Caesar is a talented up and coming 16 year old songwriter from Manchester. After releasing his first single in November 2022, “It’s Plain Knowing” at 15 years old, he has managed to amass a passionate and loyal online following and a deep connection between him and the local Manchester scene through handing out free CDs of his music. Working with local promoters such as ‘Scruff Of The Neck’ and ‘Dusty Pop Entertainment’ to put together highly attended gigs at Manchester Academy 3 and The Deaf Institute. Now, Caesar has released a limited edition compilation CD, which is quickly on its way to selling out, has been featured as Artist Of The Week on Tameside Radio, as well as continuing to grow his loyal fanbase and write new music. People know that this is a once in a generation opportunity.

Learning his first two chords at the age of 11 and beginning to write his first few songs during lockdown, it quickly became clear that this is what he wanted to do. After years of maturing his technique, the songs he writes in his room include ideas of identity, romance, isolation and the questions of where are we, why are we here and how did we get here? Taking influences from such genres as Dream Pop, Post-Punk, folk and general alternative music with influences from bands such as The Chameleons, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Cure, The Velvet Underground to name a few.

Megan Wyn Releases New Single ‘You Don’t Get It’

Following on from the absolutely brilliant ‘Polaroid’ and ‘Better Of You’ Megan Wyn has decided to go in a different direction, now with a band behind her and removing both previous tracks from streaming she has released a fantastic ‘debut’ single with a more mature sound titled ‘You Don’t Get It’.

The Welsh singer songwriter from Anglesey has been on the festival / tour scene since she was 16 years old. Megan describes this track as “her coming of age” song.

Megan Says:
When I was 16, I moved from a very small town on Anglesey to Manchester, which is, of course, a much bigger city. With starting such a different chapter in my life, I experienced a lot of overwhelming feelings that I didn’t quite understand or expect to feel, which is where I got the line, ‘You don’t get it cause you never have.’ This song is me explaining to myself that it’s okay to feel those feelings. Although I had an overwhelming feeling of homesickness, I knew that this was the right step in order for me to grow as a person. This song is all about that journey.”

The indie rock chick has a phenomenal voice. With her undeniable talent and at such a young age, there’s no surprise that her fan base is growing quickly.

‘You Don’t Get It’, sounds like a cut from the Ayoade classic, Submarine. It is a quintessentially British sounding record full of hope and desperation in equal measure.

What makes it different to most records in this area of music though, is the way in which Megan has drawn upon her influences new and old. Her love of Amazon’s blockbuster series, The Six, almost oozes out of your speakers as her PJ Harvey-esque croon delivers ear worm after ear worm.

Rare that an artist is effortlessly cool whilst calling upon pop sensibilities relentlessly. Wistful but assured in equal measure, it sounds exactly like a teenager figuring themselves out.

She has previously been championed by the likes of  BBC London’s Gary Crowleyand BBC Wales’s Adam Thomas Walton. Megan also featured in CLASHmagazine as part of The Great Escape Online Festival as well as appearing at the  Isle Of Wight Festival, on the This Feeling stage, and the iconic River Stage.

With another single pencilled for release before the year is out and a handful of festivals and shows to announce for the end of 2023 and early 2024, Megan is putting a line in the sand and stepping directly into the spotlight an artist like herself deserves.

You can catch her live in the UK at the following shows

09.09.2023 – Tha Knows Festival – Sheffield

20.10.2023 – YES Basement – Manchester (Headline Show)

Scotty Dunning Releases New Single ‘House Party’

SCOTTY DUNNING is the young Manchester based singer-songwriter who combines powerful, direct and hard hitting lyricism, with jangly indie alt pop melodies, to create kitchen sink commentary tracks with a social conscience wrapped up  and delivered in feel good instrumentals.

Although Scotty is billed as a solo artist he is backed in his music by his band. In the band Scotty is on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, with Finley Corcoran  on lead guitar, Trevor Cox on bass guitar and  Mckenzie Jackson on Drums.

To date, Scotty has released two previous singles ‘Fucking Crazy’ (March 2021) and ‘The Way That You Are’ (May 2021) both of which were received to a fair bit of praise and acclaim, citing Scotty as a “rare up and coming talent”

Since the release of his first two singles, Scotty has spent some quality time seriously focussing on and perfecting new music.

‘House Party’ is a straight off the bat high octane banger of a track with its fast paced rhythmic drumming and blistering guitar solos perfectly matched with the questioning, deliberate lyricism of the verses and the chanting chorus hooks lines. “I wrote the track around 4 years ago about a night out and arguing with my girlfriend who wanted me to come and see her, however I was having too much of a good night out to leave. The whole track is based on me debating with myself on whether or not I should leave the party or stay! ”

North ‘Rise’ EP Review

The debut E.P. Rise, from Manchester ensemble, North, quietly emerged from its wrappings at the start of 2023. No pomp, no fuss, just slipping into being, like something soft-bodied and vulnerable slipping out of it carapace amidst a hard, unforgiving world.

North are a five piece band based in the north of the city fronted by Stuart Wolfenden, a face that will be familiar to many following his years treading the boards, walking the cobbles and appearing in great British films like Dead Man’s Shoes. This is no vanity project of some thesp though, this is a record about thoughts and feelings that are usually kept inside the darker places and not usually for public consumption. It is about the types of life choices that will erode vanity and show it to be character trait preserved for others, not our Stuart. Maybe once, but not anymore.

Rise consists of three tracks, the opener, Recovery, sets the band’s stall out; no Friday night bangers here, this way leads only to truth and that soft bodied vulnerability I mentioned above. Do not abandon hope though, this is an uplifting song that foreshadows what is instore as the record progresses, brutally honest songwriting and subtly superb musicianship. Track two, Manchester, is about home, the promises of being young in the coolest city on Earth and what that feels like when you are older, wiser and perhaps, not as cool anymore.

The final track on the E.P. is called “You”, a song of love and hope, and I feel North have saved the best till last here. The guitar work is sublime in a Knopfler or Gilmore style, bluesy progressions, expressive note bends and emotional sustains but with an understated, economic beauty, it is the star of the show here. The band and the song itself allow plenty of space for the guitar to connect with the listener too, which I love. My only criticism of this track, at just over 6 minutes long, it is just too short! I didn’t want it to end.

Rise is a quietly brutal record, it shows the bands vulnerabilities but at the same time it tells us that it is good to be vulnerable; other people are vulnerable too and if we believe in each other, well, we might just get through this. I would love to see North play and I would want it to be in a tiny, smoke filled room at about 2 in the morning after a day of drowning my sorrows, that would be just magic.

You can catch North playing when they headline the Stone Sugar Jamboree on the 15th of April, you can stream the songs from all the usual places and find them on facebook.
