The Great Leslie Release New Single ‘My Left Eye’

Formed during lockdown, this band of brothers consists of Ollie Trevers (Vocals and Rhythm Guitar), Ryan Lavender (Drums), Alfie Pawsey (Bass) and Freddie Miles (Lead Guitar).

In 2022 they had great success when they decided to move in a different direction, with top tracks such as ‘Feel Alive’, ‘Liquid Spells’ and ‘All Good Things.’ The band also landed amazing support shows and were ofcourse championed by many radio stations.

Although it has only been a matter of months since the release of the bands first EP, excitingly they are releasing another entitled ’21st Century Problems’. The band have decided to stick their necks out above the parapet and talk about what really concerns them. The EP itself focuses on the issues facing today’s society; that of climate change, immigration and asylum, mental health, the right to protest and finally but not least sexism and violence against women. ‘My Left Eye’ is their latest release

2023 has seen them on an upward trajectory with their ever growing fan base demonstrating that they belong at the top of the bill with the biggest names on the indie scene.

This Is The Music (Mark Speller) Music Scene Wales Monthly Collaboration

ThisIsTheMusic delivers his first piece for Music Scene Wales and talks about how his page started and the exciting features for the blog.

For those that aren’t aware, I started ThisIsTheMusic during lockdown, initially sharing some of my music memorabilia from gig tickets to photos with band members (Bonehead and Graham Coxon to name two!) and growing my vinyl, before focusing my attention on unsigned bands/artists.

Initially my focus was through playlists, before making the decision to start a “song of the day” providing a summary of why I loved the chosen song.

This soon progressed into writing blogs, previewing new music releases, from singles, to EPs and albums, with the odd live review added into the mix too, helping to champion new music and bands that are well and truly on the rise.

In early 2021, I was asked to interview LOCK-IN, a band I’d discovered in September 2020, for a podcast, which at this point didn’t exist!!  In case you weren’t aware LOCK-IN have continued to grow their fan base and just a few weeks ago, headlined the This Feeling tent at truck festival: the first of many headline slots for the band, I’m sure.

Since those very early beginnings the podcast has continued to grow and it’s been great getting to chat to some many different bands and artists, such as The Shed Project, Columbia (Now Those Heavy Souls), Marseille, San Quentin, Capes and Holy Coves and many more.

In addition, I host the “Rise of The Indie Artists” show on a weekly basis on Future Hits Radio. I joined Future Hits Radio at the start of 2023, having done a radio show elsewhere on and off for 18 months. Future Hits is a great opportunity for ThisIsTheMusic to shine the spotlight on unsigned bands/artists, through playing forthcoming releases, or songs that the new music community has grown to love!

As a result of the blogs, the podcasts and the radio show, I’ve been able to make some great friends be that band members or people who are like me, fans.

So where does ThisIsTheMusic and Music Scene Wales fit together?

Well, I’ve been presented with a fantastic opportunity to write a monthly article in the Music Scene Wales blog. Whilst I’ll still be writing my own blogs, the monthly article with Music Scene Wales, will see me start a new series, which after much thought and consideration (if you believe that you’ll believe anything haha) will be called ThisIsTheMusic New Music recommendations.

Every month, I’ll be writing about my 5 favourite songs, that I’ve really enjoyed listening to and will hopefully be loved by the Music Scene Wales community.

I’ll also be contributing to the recently launched Indie Revolution playlist, currently curated by Scott Marsden and Colin Marshall, which is something I’m looking forward to.

For everything ThisIsTheMusic you can find me across social media here https://linktr.ee/ThisIsTheMusic_

The Rise of The Indie Artists show is on Future Hits Radio every Thursday from 7pm

Holy Coves Release Music Video To ‘Away We Go’

AWAY WE GO’ is the fourth video in a series of five music videos to be released by the band created by award winning Ukrainian Filmmaker Taras Merenkov.

This video for the single ‘AWAY WE GO’ is taken from the Druids and Bards album and was filmed by Jason Griffith.

Notably, Taras won an award for the video he shot for the band for their video for ‘The Hurt Within’. Merenkov’s hazy cinematic style of direction really emphasises the music and makes a formidable visual, filmed on location in the band’s local vicinity in Wales.

‘AWAY WE GO’ is taken from the band’s critically acclaimed album ‘Druids and Bards‘ which is out now via Welsh label ‘Yr Wyddfa Records’.

‘Druids and Bards’ has been championed by Gary Crowley on BBC Radio London and playlisted on Amazing Radio’s A List, Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music and with BBC Radio Wales support from Huw Stephens and Adam Walton. It’s fair to say that  North Wales Psych-Rock Band Holy Coves have had quite the year!

Through long time friend and Producer David Wrench (just mixed the new BLUR album), ‘Holy Coves’ were put in touch with Texan Producer Erik Wofford (The Black Angels / Explosions In The Sky) and have built quite a magical working relationship, one where Wofford found himself on Mixing and Mastering duties for the ‘Druids And Bards’ album and it has certainly contributed massively to their new sound and ethos.

The track ‘AWAY WE GO’ is the work of Welsh Singer/Songwriter, Scott Marsden and was Recorded at Pehhesgyn Hall Studios, Menai Bridge Anglesey, Produced by Scott Marsden, John Lawrence (Gorky Zycotic Mynci ) & Owain Ginsberg ( We Are Animal / Hippies vs Ghosts) and Mixed by Erik Wofford (The Black Angels) in Austin Texas USA.

Scott has said of the inspiration behind the track and video:

“The line ‘ All I see is you and me ‘ was written for my wife. She’s my soulmate,

We’ve been through so much together, Whenever I sing this I think of her.”

And further

This record is about stepping out of the darkness and into the light”

The physical copies of the Druids and Bards album sold out within just two months and the band are set to release another coloured vinyl pressing shortly.

This year has also seen Holy Coves touring the whole of the UK and they have plans to do so again before the end of the year. During their earlier tour of the UK they took in festivals such as the Isle Of Wight Festival where they enjoyed playing to a packed out tent on the This Feeling stage.

Huw James Releases New Album ‘Challenges’

Huw James is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Gwent valleys in South Wales.

Though many styles are noticeable throughout Huw’s songs, they all stem from a love of Folk and Blues.
For many years Huw was part of a successful covers band called Flashback which played extensively throughout South Wales and the South-West of England, as well as making a couple of appearances at The Queen’s Birthday Ball in Cairo, Egypt in 2002 and 2004.

In 2015, Huw finally left the cover scene after being inspired by his previous bands, Flashback and 3MPH. They eventually became the vehicles that drove him to pursue his love of songwriting. Huw is back with a spell-binding 13-track album, available now on all major digital platforms.
