North ‘Rise’ EP Review

The debut E.P. Rise, from Manchester ensemble, North, quietly emerged from its wrappings at the start of 2023. No pomp, no fuss, just slipping into being, like something soft-bodied and vulnerable slipping out of it carapace amidst a hard, unforgiving world.

North are a five piece band based in the north of the city fronted by Stuart Wolfenden, a face that will be familiar to many following his years treading the boards, walking the cobbles and appearing in great British films like Dead Man’s Shoes. This is no vanity project of some thesp though, this is a record about thoughts and feelings that are usually kept inside the darker places and not usually for public consumption. It is about the types of life choices that will erode vanity and show it to be character trait preserved for others, not our Stuart. Maybe once, but not anymore.

Rise consists of three tracks, the opener, Recovery, sets the band’s stall out; no Friday night bangers here, this way leads only to truth and that soft bodied vulnerability I mentioned above. Do not abandon hope though, this is an uplifting song that foreshadows what is instore as the record progresses, brutally honest songwriting and subtly superb musicianship. Track two, Manchester, is about home, the promises of being young in the coolest city on Earth and what that feels like when you are older, wiser and perhaps, not as cool anymore.

The final track on the E.P. is called “You”, a song of love and hope, and I feel North have saved the best till last here. The guitar work is sublime in a Knopfler or Gilmore style, bluesy progressions, expressive note bends and emotional sustains but with an understated, economic beauty, it is the star of the show here. The band and the song itself allow plenty of space for the guitar to connect with the listener too, which I love. My only criticism of this track, at just over 6 minutes long, it is just too short! I didn’t want it to end.

Rise is a quietly brutal record, it shows the bands vulnerabilities but at the same time it tells us that it is good to be vulnerable; other people are vulnerable too and if we believe in each other, well, we might just get through this. I would love to see North play and I would want it to be in a tiny, smoke filled room at about 2 in the morning after a day of drowning my sorrows, that would be just magic.

You can catch North playing when they headline the Stone Sugar Jamboree on the 15th of April, you can stream the songs from all the usual places and find them on facebook.

Show Dogs Release New EP ‘Y Rhwd Gwelw’

Composed of members of long-standing Cardiff stalwarts TJ Roberts, Rainbow Maniac and AHGEEBEE, Show Dogs meld acerbic observations of contemporary Welsh life and politics, set to a chamber-pop soundtrack. Artwork comes from photographer Elijah Lewis Thomas and Ben Wood.

On Y Rhwd Gwelw, translated as ‘The Pale Rust’, Show Dog’s continue their exploration of contemporary Welsh life and the country’s political landscape. Opening with the track ‘Tropical Republic’, the lyrics consider the potential future of a Welsh republic, particularly lead singer TJ Roberts’ propensity for romanticising such a distant prospect. Second is the single ‘Don’t Go In The Water’ which explores the pollution of welsh waters and the paranoia induced by living so close to irradiated mud. The EP closes with the band’s namesake, ‘Show Dogs’, an republican anthem dealing with national identity and monarchy.

The band continue to move towards a more rich and orchestral instrumentation, including a wide array of percussion, vintage synthesisers and twelve-string guitars evoking ‘Village Green’ era Kinks and The Boo Radleys. Engineered and produced by Thomas V Westgard and Secondson (Danielle Lewis, Super Furry Animals) at After Life
Studios. Show Dogs proclaim that punk is not dead in Wales and its message has arrived in 3-part harmony.

The Heavy North Release New Single ‘Where Are You Now?’

Liverpool blues rock band The Heavy North return with a brand new single and music video for ‘Where Are You Now.’
The single is a high energy rock anthem with brilliant guitar riffs and is full of serious attitude and swagger. The lyrics are relatable as the song is about people who have come and gone in your life and wondering what they are doing now, are they still the same person or has life changed them.
This song shows The Heavy North are at the top of their game with a new album in the works and a huge hometown gig at the end of the year. 2023 is already looking great for The Heavy North.

Discussing the meaning behind the new single, The Heavy North frontman Kenny Stuart said “Where Are You Now? is about remembering people who come and go in your life, and wondering whether they’re still the same person they once were and thinking about what they’re up to”.

“The lyrics explore whether those people we used to know are still the same as how we remembered them, or have their circumstances or situations changed for better or worse”.

‘Where Are You Now?’ marks the first glimpse of new music from Liverpool six-piece The Heavy North since the release of their critically-acclaimed debut album Electric Soul Machine on Record Store Day in April 2022.

Following a successful year which saw the band embark on their first 10-date UK headline tour as well as performing alongside fellow Merseyside artists The Zutons, Cast, The Boo Radleys and Red Rum Club, The Heavy North ended a landmark year with a with a sold out show at the Arts Club Theatre in Liverpool.

The band’s debut album Electric Soul Machine was heavily featured in some of 2022’s end-of-year round-ups (“the perfect encapsulation of this band’s musical talents” – Northern Chorus’s Top 10 Albums of 2022) as well as being the subject of a Tim’s Twitter Listening Party with Tim Burgess (The Charlatans) last year.

To coincide with the release of new music and the much-anticipated second album later this year, The Heavy North have announced a handful of headline shows in May which will see the blues-rock six-piece return to Scotland to headline Glasgow’s Audio (19th) followed by new Sheffield venue Network (20th), The Live Rooms in Chester (25th) and the legendary Water Rats in Kings Cross, London (26th).

The Heavy North have also announced their biggest hometown headline show to date at Liverpool’s Camp and Furnace on Friday 1st December 2023.

The huge Liverpool show follows The Heavy North’s sold out 500-capacity Arts Club show last year where the band performed their debut album Electric Soul Machine from start to finish, accompanied by a 12-piece band featuring strings, a brass section and backing vocalists.

Speaking about the band’s end-of-year show, Kenny said “We’re made up to reveal our next big Liverpool show at the Camp and Furnace courtesy of our friends at EVOL, and we’re looking forward to performing a set of brand new tracks taken from our upcoming second album.

“After the success of our Arts Club show last year, we’ll also be inviting some guest musicians to perform with us again, so we look forward to seeing everyone in December for a special night in an incredible venue”

Tickets for this unmissable hometown headline show are available from 10am on Friday 24th February 2023.

The Heavy North’s brand new single ‘Where Are You Now?’ is available on all download and streaming platforms now.

Hippies Vs Ghosts ‘Green Planets’ Album Review

Following on from the brilliant ‘Giamocs’ Hippies vs Ghosts release ‘Green Planets’, the sixth fantastic new album from Welsh experimental indie rocker Owain Ginsberg, hailing from Cwm y Glo in North Wales.

A kaleidoscope of instruments and unique sounds, this album has you hooked from the first track ‘Wrth Y Mor’ right down to the finale ‘Potions in the Morning.’ It’s full of free flowing music that has no boundaries, groovy and psychedelic.
‘Western Lie’ has to be a favourite for me. An epically atmospheric track!

Although Hippies vs Ghosts have released six albums you will only find two on spotify. For fans who want to check out their back catalogue head over to Bandcamp.

Show Dogs release fourth single ‘Don’t Go In The Water’ from upcoming EP ‘Y Rhwd Gwelw’

Don’t Go In The Water, inspired by the Beach Boys’ own eco-protest song Don’t Go Near the Water, takes aim at the perpetual issue of water pollution on Welsh coastlines. Stemming from lead singer TJ Roberts’ paranoia of living so close to approximately 100,000 tonnes of irradiated mud, melody and lyrics jostle with a nervous energy and shifting intensity; from a delicate sincerity to an ironic apathy.

The band continue to move towards a more rich and orchestral instrumentation, including a wide array of percussion, vintage synthesisers and twelve-string guitars evoking ‘Village Green’ era Kinks and The Boo Radleys.

Engineered and produced by Thomas V Westgard and Secondson (Danielle Lewis, Super Furry Animals) at After Life Studios, the band spent the summer of 2022 recording three EPs the second of which, ‘Y Rhwd Gwelw’ (The Pale Rust) will be released on the 17th of March. Show Dogs proclaim that punk is not dead in Wales and its message has arrived in 3-part harmony.

The Kairos Release New Single ‘Thick Of It’

THE KAIROS  are the Liverpool based quartet composed of Tom Dempsey on Lead Vocals and Guitar, Owen Forrester on Bass, Lewis Chambers on Guitar and Sam Bradley on Drums and Backing-Vocals.

First formed in 2019 and with an impressive array of much critically acclaimed single releases already under their belts, THE KAIROS over the past 12 months have left a trailblaze in their wake with their most successful year to date, seeing them release a total of 3 singles,  amassing a plethora of new and devoted fans off of the back of their first UK tour, signing a new Management and Booking Agent deal with Solo Music Agency (Blondie, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Iggy Pop, James) and indisputably, bursting onto the music scene with a bang….  All this aside, however, everything the band have achieved over the past year they say has been leading up to this moment and what they are about to unleash!

THE KAIROS have been working tirelessly on their latest musical offerings, an EP,  ‘Better Late Than Never’,  comprising 4 brand new tracks, the lead single of which ‘Thick Of It’ is out now.

‘Thick Of It’ is a strong, anthemic track that comes in shouting at the top of its lungs, making the band’s intentions very clear; they mean business and you’d better strap yourselves in and be ready as this is gonna be one hell of a ride!

Straight off the bat you are thrown into a euphoric whirlwind of high octane energy with blistering guitars and frenzied drumming.  There’s barely space to breathe before the onslaught of the atomic, crowd rousing chorus kicks in, that without question, has all the boxes ticked for a stadium sized rock n roll anthem .

Recorded and produced at The Motor Museum in Liverpool synonymous with the likes of Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and The 1975, ‘Thick of It’ is a one-way bullet train of a track, designed to throw adoring fans, and newcomers alike, into a frenzy at THE KAIROS’  live shows. None more so than the band’s homecoming  EP release gig on the 25th May at Hangar 34, in the heart of Liverpool’s Baltic district. TICKETS LINKED HERE

New release ‘Thick Of It’ further cements the notion that THE KAIROS are most definitely a band that you need to be looking out for in 2023.

‘Better Late Than Never’ is due for release on the 19th May 2023.
