The Montagues ‘Come Closer’ Single

Hailing from the shadows of yesteryear and bygone family holiday destinations, soaked in the nostalgia of the sights and smells evoked by amusement arcades and fun fairs of the North Wales Coast, The Montagues are the five-piece Alt Rock/indie Band consisting of Kyle Parry on Lead Vocals and guitar, Jack Mayall on guitar, Jonny Taylor on bass, Jack Wells on drums and Oli Harman on keys, who together deliver a layered, anthemic yet melodic sound.

Guitar driven and accompanied by punchy bass lines and hook induced vocals, The Montagues  embody everything that is looked for and loved in a modern indie band. Lyrically influenced by the stories of a working-class Welsh town, desperately trying to cling onto the highs of days gone by, you can’t help but get wrapped up in the nostalgia of their relatable tales.

The band’s latest release ‘Come Closer’ – Is a heart warming, earworm of a track filled with a nostalgia you recognise but quite can’t figure out. With an infectious guitar riff and lyrics focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel post Covid, ‘Come Closer’ will have you nodding along in unity and clicking that repeat button. With its pounding drums, thumping bass lines and synth sections, ‘Come Closer’ has all the feel good vibes of the safety and innocence of happy childhood memories, wrapped up in a magnificent stadium sized tune.

Lyrically, ‘Come Closer’  was written as an ode to people being able to come together again after the pandemic “The pinks out of your eyes, you’re a freak in your disguise, it’s over, won’t you come closer”  hinting at the square eyes we all gained from staring at screens for too long and the masks we all wore as disguises.

Frontman Kyle has said of the track:

“If you don’t let me be myself, I’m afraid to be someone else” Kyle explains “I wrote this about being forced to be someone I’m not, we are social animals, being told to stay indoors, not gig, not see friends and family is something I took really hard, this particular lyric was a message to the powers that be

The band have received previous airplay through BBC Introducing Merseyside, BBC Introducing Wales, airplay in the USA on Amazing radio and have recently performed live from the Cavern Club which was featured on BBC Introducing Merseyside in September.

Previous Press Accolades

“It’s not too difficult to imagine large crowds enjoying from a big stage at one of our larger festivals” Adam Walton – BBC Introducing – Wales

“High octane Rhyl rockers with stadium sized riffs” Gigslutz

“You can see these on one of the big stages soon like another local band, Catfish and The Bottlemen” Events Conwy

Megan Wyn ‘Jealousy’ Single

Anglesey’s very own Megan Wyn has just released her third single ‘Jealousy’ and it really is phenomenal. Following on from the success of her first two brilliant singles ‘Polaroid’ and ‘Better of You’ Megan has definitely carried on the momentum and shown another new side to her song writing abilities, she just keeps getting better and better.
I hear quality tones in her already mature voice similar to Stevie Nicks and PJ Harvey but she still keeps her own originality and sounds current. If these three singles are anything to go by then Megan is already a very consistent song writer at such a young age, the possibilities are endless. I see a very bright future ahead for the Welsh singer songwriter.

Megan has been ripping up the circuit as support for so many bands and artists over the last couple of years including The Skinner Brothers, John Power, (Cast, The Las) Andrew Cushin the list goes on and on. She’s also been appearing at numerous well established festivals all over the UK with massive support from radio and the BBC playlisting her on the BBC Radio Wales A-list
Im looking forward to seeing Megan with a full live band headlining her own shows in the future, its only a matter of time! Definitely a star in the making.

1987tilpresent – Around the Mind – EP

Wrexham football fanatic and lifelong supporter Neal Smith released his Around the Mind EP earlier this year.

A selection of beautiful, chilled out acoustic folk songs. A 6 track EP including the single Rosanna which was released back in 2020 and my favourite 1987tilpresent song which opens up the EP Over Polite.

I first heard Neals music back in 2017 when he released his debut album Letters to the Past which is another record you really should check out. Keep an eye out for Neals gigs as he’s a regular on the acoustic circuit.

Pixy Jones Announces Debut Album ‘Bits n Bobs’

El Goodo guitarist and songwriter ‘Pixy Jones’ has announced that his debut album entitled ‘Bits n Bobs’ is due for release on 16th of September via Strangetown Records. Branching away from the familiar El Goodo platform, Welsh psych scene stalwart Pixy Jones has himself compiled a truly remarkable collection of tracks that fluctuate from 60’s harmony-rich psych pop, to Alt-Country with ringing tremelo guitar.

The swaggering ‘I’m Not There’ is the first single to be taken from ‘Bits n Bobs’ accompanied by a magical version of Beatles track ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ as it’s B SIde, which is available to stream now.

Pixy had this to say about the release:

The album was originally intended as a solo project under the pseudonym of “Wallace Russell”. I recorded it alongside the recording of Zombie (El Goodo) whenever I could get in the studio. There are some really old songs that have always been overlooked for ‘El Goodo’ albums for one reason or another, a few new ones which I wrote specifically for this, and a couple that would have probably ended up on the intended double album version of Zombie if we’d kept going with the double album idea. I’ve since ditched the ‘Wallace Russell’ name and gone back to ‘Pixy Jones’ as I figured there’s no need to have a pseudonym if nobody knows who you are in the first place. Even though I dropped the name I’ve kept the walrus mask for now as it is more photogenic than my actual face.

I had no recording budget so I had to fund it by quitting smoking and saving the money up to pay for studio time. It took, I think, two and a half years to record, which is by far the quickest I’ve ever recorded an album. Would have been quicker too if it wasn’t for Covid!

Originally I wanted it to just be a quickly recorded slap dash and get it out sort of thing but I had a year and a half during Covid to think about it a bit more and ended up taking more care to get it done properly. It was just me there so I played most of it myself apart from Stephen Black (Sweet Baboo) who played brass and woodwind on one song and Rhodri Brooks (AhGeeBe) plays some pedal steel on a couple.

Elliott and Canny from ‘El Goodo’ played drums and bass on Wind Street during the Zombie recording sessions.

The album was recorded and mixed in Aerial Studios with Tim Lewis, (Thighpaulsandra), a couple of songs were finished in the house during the lockdowns.

It’ll be released on Strangetown Records.

Hippies vs Ghosts Release 5th Album ‘Giamocs’

Owain Ginsberg (The Heights, We Are Animal) returns with Hippies vs Ghosts 5th album titled ‘Giamocs’ released via Bandcamp.

The Welsh multi-instrumentalist, singer songwriter & producer is on fine form as always, he is easily one of the most consistent song-writers over the past two decades. ‘Giamocs’ oozes class from beginning to end.

Recorded at his home studio in France the record has elements of Can and songs which wouldn’t be out of place on a Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie movie soundtrack, to be fair that would be a poor portrayal of his song-writing because for me his songs are in a different league to any songs that ever appear in these movies.

Owain has an ability that not many other musicians can ever reach. He always manages to capture something which sounds so alive and free, tribal in space! Some of the best melodies and riffs you could never imagine. He really attacks your mind with melodies, its futuristic yet still has the deepest of roots and gets right into your soul.

I’m not the first to say that Owain is a living genius. I’ve heard it said by some of the best names in music over the years.

Adam Waltons Cloudburst EP is subtle and beautifully crafted

Last weekend I stumbled upon this gem of an EP by welsh singer songwriter Adam Walton. I spent the whole weekend relaxing and listening to this on repeat. Its subtle and beautifully crafted, there’s a sweet vulnerability to his vocals which I love. Very therapeutic songs. Definitely worth a listen.
