Olive Grinter Releases New Album ‘Hugs’

Following four critically praised singles, ‘Hugs’ is a tapestry of songs that invites the listener into the embrace of Olive’s unique sonic world. From start to finish, each song is stripped of all trivialities. It is songwriting at its most raw and vital, where every moment of sadness, wistfulness and honesty is earned. Performing each track entirely solo, Olive has demonstrated her versatility within limitation, embracing and commanding the sonic landscape as her own.

Album opener ‘Get Lost’, sets the tone for the album by introducing Olive’s distinct mix of jazz and folk with a pastoral round of cascading voices, a feature that continues in follow-up ‘Mother Nature’. Both ‘Mother Nature’s’ and ‘Murmurations’’ prosody propel the listener to the heart of their themes; a desire to convene and reunite with nature and its rhythms. ‘Finding Home’ changes pace, highlighting Olive’s background in jazz distinctly in its vocal runs and extended harmony. At the album’s halfway point, ‘I’m Gunna Choose’ is filled with a building tension, both in content and delivery. The enjambment of the verses, married with a step-wise melody, capture the malaise of being trapped in repetitive habits of isolation and self-doubt, only for the choruses to burst in as a promise to choose a path away from loss. ‘My Seeds’, comes as the response.

Via a gospel-inspired melody, Olive creates a vow to care and nurture; singing as if to another but also as a reminder to herself to take care. ‘Soggy Tuesday’ is a carefree and youthful song that captures the mindful moments when one can simply be as the world continues to move. ‘Maybe It’s Time’ and ‘Feeling Queer’ are Olive at her most vulnerable. At once both universal and unique to her own experiences, Olive captures a highly assured vulnerability that is reserved only for the most accomplished song-writers and performers. The album closes with ‘Lost’, the bookend to its opener with the theme returning only to bloom in a fuzz of delay and reverb.

Throughout the album, Olive draws comparisons to artists such as Laura Marling, Snowpoet, Adrienne Lenker and Norah Jones. The album is out now and was engineered and produced by Sam Barnes (AhGeeBee, Part Time Signals, Boy Azooga).

Olive Grinter Releases New Single ‘Feeling Queer’

Following on from her last mesmerising single Murmurations, Olive Grinter releases the quintessentially beautiful ‘Feeling Queer’

‘Feeling Queer’ is the songwriter at her most personal and delicate. In ‘Feeling Queer’ Olive eschews metaphor and naturalistic imagery for an honest admittance of love and comfort to a partner. Olive walks a path, seldom achieved by only the most accomplished songwriters, of appearing vulnerable with total and unfailing sincerity.

‘Feeling Queer’ starts as an admittance of distance from desire, a quiet acceptance tinged with sadness. As the melody repeats, the distance recedes as the lyrics move from imagery to narrative. Olive’s stunning voice strengthens and the sonic landscape widens, as she centres herself and her muse. It is at once deeply personal and universal in the way few love songs achieve. In the song’s conclusion Olive unifies her voices to create a deep and ever undulating harmony; a reflection of the pure union within her lyrics. Once again, ‘Feeling Queer’ draws comparisons to Laura Marling, Snowpoet and Adrienne Lenker.

‘Feeling Queer’ is the final single from her debut album, due in mid 2024, which was recorded alongside producer Sam Barnes (AhGeeBee, Part Time Signals, Boy Azooga).

Olive Grinter Releases New Single ‘Murmurations’

Following on from her debut single, released late 2023, Olive Grinter’s second single ‘Murmurations’ offers a further glimpse at the depth and intelligence in her folk song writing. A perfect symbiosis of lyrics and melody, the prosody propels the listener to the heart of the song’s theme; a desire to convene and reunite with nature and its rhythms. Building from almost nothing, the song becomes a chorus of voices, all
yearning in unison for an escape.

Once again, Olive’s musical lineage is apparent in her vocal delivery, with clear blues influences in the subtle turns and inflections throughout. Reducing her guitar to simply a pedal, her voice (accompanied by many iterations) is the sole point of movement, which remains vulnerable but without single fault or waiver. Similar to her previous release, ‘Murmurations’ draws comparisons to Laura Marling, Snowpoet and Laurie Anderson in the layering of vocals.

‘Murmurations’ is the second single from her debut album, due in early 2024, which was recorded alongside producer Sam Barnes (AhGeeBee, Part Time Signals, Boy Azooga). Of the single, Olive writes: “The word ‘murmuration’ is used to describe the dance of flocks of starlings. Their chaotic yet harmonious movements are entrancing. I like to think they emulate the mayhem of everyday life. If you were to step inside a murmuration it would be horrifically loud, turbulent and fast-paced. However, step back and watch it from afar and you witness one of the most peaceful, mystical phenomena nature has to give. This song is about escaping into the slower, tranquil pace of nature.”

A beautifully crafted song that perfectly emulates sitting back and watching the beauty of nature.

Olive Grinter Releases Debut Single ‘Maybe It’s Time’

With ‘Maybe It’s Time’, Olive Grinter establishes herself as a vibrant new voice in the UK folk scene. A deeply personal reflection of relationships and their end; ‘Maybe It’s Time’ is a resolution to continue beyond heartache. At once both universal and unique to her own experiences, Olive captures a highly assured vulnerability that is reserved only for the most accomplished song-writers and performers.

A student of Jazz, Olive’s performance is impeccable in its delivery from the most technical to the most subtle vocal movements. Accompanied only by her guitar, she embodies the entire sonic space, starting and concluding the song with the same candid intimacy. Entirely unpretentious, ‘Maybe It’s Time’ is a true marriage of story and performance; a work of art truly greater than the sum of its earnest parts, drawing comparisons to contemporaries such as This is The Kit, Snowpoet and Laura Marling.

As the first single from her debut album, due in early 2024, ‘Maybe it’s Time’ was recorded alongside producer Sam Barnes (AhGeeBee, Part Time Signals, Boy Azooga). Of the album, Olive writes:

“These songs are reflections of conversations with myself and what I’d like to express to others. It’s a small part of a long journey. A reflection on how we see ourselves: within the chaos of life, within the chaos of connecting with those around us, and an attempt to spread kindness and support in the moments we need them most. It is a warm embrace, open arms, a hug.”

‘Maybe It’s Time’ is a beautiful song and I eagerly await the album next year. The debut single is out now across all streaming platforms.
